In this post I explain what to see in the Castle, how to get there on your own and the options you have to visit it with a guide.
VISIT HAAR CASTLE, UTRCHT, NETHERLANDS
Haar Castle is a medieval castle built in the 14th century and rebuilt in the 19th century by architect Pierre Cypers, a renowned Dutch architect. The castle is the private property of the Van Zuylen Van Nijevelt family.
The castle has more than 200 rooms, being one of the largest in Europe. In its last renovation in the 19th century, an advanced heating and running water system was installed, which was extremely modern for the time.
Every year, the castle hosts the Elfia festival, a fantasy and cosplay event that attracts thousands of visitors dressed in elaborate costumes especially for the celebration. In addition, many concerts and cultural exhibitions and historical celebrations are held there.
The gardens are beautiful. There are many specific spaces and areas such as the rose garden, the English garden... There are lakes, ponds, statues, paths full of nature on each side, forest areas, picnic areas... they are a fantasy.
Throughout the guided tour you will be shown several rooms decorated with historical furniture, works of art, sculptures... also several rooms, the ballroom, the library...
HOW TO GET TO HAAR CASTLE, UTRECHT
If you dare to go by car, it is only about 26 minutes from the center to the castle. Although if you were not thinking of renting a car, since the center of Utrecht is easy to get around with public transport, you can also get here by bus. The bus that goes direct is line 127 and the cost is around 6 euros per ticket each way.
If you go on your own, I recommend purchasing your ticket to the castle online in advance to avoid lines.
Another great option to go from Utrecht to Castle de Haar is to do it with an organized excursion. With this excursion you will have transportation included, an English or French speaking guide, entrance to the castle, some snacks and soft drinks.
