Curiosities of Frida Kahlo

Frida Kahlo is one of the most popular global icons of Mexican origin. Her revolutionary and feminist ideas for the time, her art and her story have captured millions of fans and we all know some of her works, even if only by sight, but... how much do we know about her? In this post, I tell you about some of the most interesting Frida Kahlo curiosities.

FRIDA KAHLO CURIOSITIES

Firda Kahlo is not her real name

Her real name was not Frida. Her name was Madgalena Carmen Frieda Kahlo and it was not until 1935 that she decided to use Frida Kahlo as her stage name.

3 years less

Haven't you ever taken years off? I do it often. Frida Kahlo did the same. She was born on July 6, 1907, although she herself claimed that she was born in 1910 during the Mexican revolution.

Origins

His father was of German origin. He was a photographer and thanks to his work he was able to afford his daughters a good education.

Frida always had health problems

Frida Kahlo always had delicate health. At the age of 6, he suffered from poliomyelitis, a disabling disease that can be fatal caused by the poliovirus or polyvirus. Due to this disease, one of his legs was shorter than the other. This led her to be the center of ridicule at her school, who began to call her Frida Duck's Foot, a nickname that she later used to sign her works.

Her studies

I don't know if the fact of having been sick as a child was the trigger for her being one of the first women to study medicine in Mexico. Although his plans changed as he got older.

A tragic accident marked her life

In 1925, while Frida was on a bus with her first boyfriend, Alejandro Gómez Arias, she realized that she had forgotten her umbrella at school. They decided to go down to look for him again, and then take another bus. This decision radically changed his life. This second bus had a very serious accident: a tram hit them and Frida ended up with damaged ribs, clavicles, pelvis, right leg, shoulder and spine. In addition, a piece of iron pierced her at the height of the abdomen and uterus (which is why she could never be a mother).

Since the tragedy...

As a result of the accident, Frida had to spend a long time in bed and hardly move. To pass the time, she began drawing for entertainment and therapy. Thanks to this fact, Frida was following this passion, becoming a great artist.

Its recovery and how it is represented in the pictures

Frida had lifelong consequences and over the years she underwent 35 operations. As a result, he had to wear corsets made of plaster and went through periods of extreme pain. She said that she felt fragile like a butterfly and that is why we can see them represented in many of her works.

Her great love, his second great pain

Frida married Diego Rivera. It was her first love and they decided to get married in 1929. Diego was never faithful to her, a fact that broke Frida's heart, who continued to forgive him in the hope that he would change, something that never happened. Finally, she decided to divorce Diego, although some time later, she remarried him.

Frida and her sexuality

As soon as she found out that Diego was still being unfaithful, even after promising that it would never happen again, she decided to repay him in the same way and live her sexuality outside of marriage. Many of these moments were experienced with other women, a fact that makes Frida openly proclaim herself bisexual.

Her paintings

Throughout her life, Frida Kahlo painted around 150 paintings, 55 of which were self-portraits. She always said that she painted self-portraits because she spent a lot of time alone, with herself, and that she was the one she knew best.

Her last cry to art

Frida's health worsened in 1954 and she finally died from complications at the age of 47. It was the same year that he was able to exhibit for the first time in an official exhibition in Mexico. Since her doctor had forbidden her to get out of bed and she didn't want to miss her own exhibition, she decided that if she couldn't get out of bed he would go with her. And yes, he managed to attend the exhibition from bed.

His last words written in his diary were; I hope for a happy exit and I hope to never return.
